78 Record Restoration

Really fast, really big, really don't hold much info.  That's the 78, but with all that being said, they still offer the charm and memories of another time.

78 Record Information

After the record was invented by Thomas Edison in 1870, a new flatter format was sought to replace the cylinder recordings used by Edison.  In 1900, 78 records arrived on the scene.  These 10 inch records were easier to store and had very large grooves (much larger than both 45s and LPs).  Because the large grooves were so spaced out, today's record aficionados would be shocked that this 10 inch record only holds about 3 minutes of music per side.  It is also hard to picture it, but these records were played back acoustically...minus any of the electronic amplification that we use today.

Though these records were a vast improvement to the cylinders, they were still heavy, fragile, and just couldn't hold enough material.  In effect, they disappeared in 1960.

Actually, though we call them 78s, none were actually designed to play back at exactly 78 revolutions per minute.  Of course, calling them "78 and a quarters" probably wouldn't have caught on either.  Most 78s actually play back at about 78.26 RPM.

Emil Berliner (inventor of the gramophone) did a thorough study of these records and determined that the most pleasing speed for playback was roughly 78 Revolutions Per Minute.   Because his British Gramophone company had established the record format, others followed suit and 78 RPM was established.  The advent of the AC motor nudged this to today's 78.26 standard.

General Record Restoration Techniques

The process of restoring your records can be just about as complicated as you'd like it to be.  There are numerous steps suggested by the true audiophiles...most of us choose the ones we find most important and throw the rest out with the bathwater.  We'll list all of these here as mini-topics...feel free to launch as many as you care about.

78 Specific Techniques

Like most mechanical recordings, the 78 will not present many problems to a product like DC SIX or DC Millennium which can remove clicks, pops, hiss, surface noise, etc. Your problems will be more with adjusting speeds, setting tracking and more mechanical type problems to be solved between your player and your record.  There is no exact process for restoring 78s...suffice to say that all of these suggestions could help, but you will develop your own system soon after you start and augment it as you see fit.

Playing your 78rpm Records

Simply playing a 78rpm record is not so simple these days.  Your modern turntable likely doesn't even have a 78rpm setting on it.  You likely don't have the correct stylus for these records AND if you play them thru your modern stereo system, they will not sound right.

Wow!  This is a lot problems to deal with, but we'll tell you now how to solve them all.

1.  Playback speed - if your turntable does not have a setting for 78rpm records, you can record them in at 45rpm and use the speed change function in DC Six to speed them up the correct amount.  There's even a "ready to use" preset in DC Six just for this.

2. Stylus - this is the needle used to play the records.  Your preset cartridge and stylus is almost certainly about .7 Mills in size - which is perfect for 33 1/3 LPs.  78s were recorded with groove widths about 2.5 Mills in size - they are over 3 times wider!  You can play an occasional 78 with your regular LP stylus, but it won't sound as good.  To get all the sound, you'll need a real 78rpm stylus for you cartridge.  These can cost hundreds of dollars today for specialized needles, but we offer varies packages of stylus click here to see our complete listings.

3.  78s Never had RIAA EQ on them.  This is the hardest problem to explain.  Basically, when LPs came out in the early 1950s, the record companies all got together and decided on a single EQ standard for all LPs.  78s never had the advantage of this standard. One thing is sure, though, if you play a 78rpm record back thru your modern stereo system, it will have the wrong EQ applied to it.   Ideally, we would want to apply the correct EQ for the record.  This is a somewhat complex subject, so we created a fairly long white paper on it called "The New Way".

If you want to read about the New Way, Click Here.

In order to record your 78s correctly, you'll need a flat preamp like our CTP-1000 and DC Six.

The Closer Look At A 78rpm Recording

On most older records, clicks and pops are the most common type of noise that you'll face.  This zoomed in view of DC SIX shows you a typical 78 recording in the upper window (yellow).  Notice the straight lines that run from the top of the yellow screen to the bottom?  These are impulse noises or clicks and pops.  The file you see below (gray) is what the wave looks like after we've run the DC SIX Impulse Noise Filter on the file.  This is but one step in a 78 Record Restoration, but you can see that DC SIX has been very successful in removing these impulse noises.

Example Files

This is a typical old recording of a 78 RPM record.  We used a variety of filters to remove the clicks, pops, hiss and other disturbances.  With 78 Record Restoration, the goals are similar to any other record restoration...to make your file sound authentic, yet noise free and clean.

Note:  On some machines, you may notice a hesitation at the beginning of your MP3 files when you click on them.  If you just let it play and then listen to it again, the hesitation will go away.  If you're using a dial-up...it's probably best to download this files and listen once you've downloaded.

Will I Need Anything Else?

Each and every system is different.  You've also got to know what it will take to make your ears happy.  For example...Sound Blasters are very popular sound cards...unfortunately, popularity doesn't make them good...just popular.  There are potentially many products that could help you...depending on the scale of the restoration project you want to undertake.  We've created a page that outlines many of these product categories, plus the individual products that we recommend.  Just click here to go there.
